And you may ask yourself, “Well, how did I get here?”
I had a girlfriend who once told me, “talking to you about music is like talking to a priest about the Bible.” I wasn’t quite sure how to take that. Her statement, as it turned out, was meant to be complimentary. At least that’s what she claimed.
I love music. I am especially fond of songs and the power they possess, their capacity to completely transform a listener’s mindset within a few minutes.
The fact that you can make art with your own voice whenever you like is remarkable. You can make music in a bathtub, car, subway, cubicle, or holding cell, depending on your musical abilities, your confidence, and the tolerance of others within earshot.
Through a song you can become an active participant in a piece of art first created years or decades ago, and rework that art in the present. This connective experience is a wonderful gift. Next time you are sitting around the campfire, try reenacting a short film or a painting, a fun but difficult exercise.
Since I was a kid, I have been seeking out new music. I have relied on friends, family, musicians, disc jockeys, teachers, record store employees, magazines, television shows, strangers… all in search of clues that would lead me to another musical discovery.
With the modern magic of smartphones and the interwebs, music is more accessible than ever. No longer is the problem deciding what album to buy. The problem is deciding what to listen to next.
For several years, I have shared songs via emails with friends and family. The emails were sometimes well received. I have decided to create a website in an effort to share more music with more people. When I sent an email to eight people, I might have connected with one or two of them. I figure by sharing a website with four-point-six-six billion, I might connect with four or five more people, which would be great.
The purpose of this website is to share and to increase the enjoyment of music. I am neither a professional critic nor journalist. I have no interest in critiquing music I do not enjoy and then disseminating that critique to others. Why would anyone do that? I have little interest in doing exhaustive research and double checking sources. I barely have interest in using proper grammar and spelling.
I hope this site brings you some joy. That’s what it’s here for.
A brief note about my musical tastes… I enjoy organic music more than electronic music. I enjoy music that is heartfelt and raw. I like dirt. I like honesty. I like humor. I like it very loud and very quiet. I like syncopation. I like to think. I like to feel.
I wrote all the words and took all the photos on all parts of this website other than the comment sections. I do not understand copyright law and I am too lazy to learn it.
